Chapter 4 Summary

I have had my fair share of internet-induced hypochondria, but before this reading I was not aware that there was a symptom checker from WebMD that could factor in multiple symptoms at a time to give a more informed list of possible diagnoses. Perhaps if I had, I would have known last year that I just had an infection and not any serious illness. That would have saved me a lot of stress. I was pleased to discover that a lot of the filtering options gone over in this module were resources that I already was taking advantage of, for once. I had often gone on Zillow in the past to look at properties for sale, but I was unsure whether it was a good resource to look at. Seeing it referenced in the book is reassuring, considering that. And on that site, I used filters for price range and location. After having checked the state of the housing market, I am now considering living in a van down by the river instead, picture that.

One of the most interesting things I learned from the reading is that intellectual property is automatically copyrighted upon the author’s creation of a tangible form of it. For a long time, I had been sparing as to whom I’d show my book or music for fear that they could steal it. This sets my mind at ease over that, somewhat. Learning that band names are not protected under copyright law was surprising, as I also had misconceptions about that. I currently use MIDI to control my analog synthesizer, so it was interesting seeing it described in the text as well. This reading was yet another valuable resource for me.
